James Beam (yes, Jim is fine) is a husband, father of three boys, and an award-winning mathematics educator at Garrison Forest School, an all-girls, independent private boarding and day school in Owings Mills, MD. He has been at Garrison Forest since 2015.
Prior to joining the faculty at Garrison Forest, he served as the mathematics and information technology department chair at Sollers Point Technical High School in Dundalk, MD from 2012 – 2015. Sollers Point is a magnet high school in the Baltimore County Public School District. He was part of a team of teachers that created a new program for career and technical students in a brand new state of the art facility.
James has also served as a mathematics faculty member at Parkville High School and Center for Mathematics, Science and Computer Science in Parkville, MD from 2006 – 2012 and as a mathematics and computer science teacher at Mount Saint Joseph High School in Baltimore Maryland from 2003 – 2006.
James earned a Masters in Applied Mathematics from the University of Maryland Baltimore County in 2014.
Prior to returning to teaching, James worked as a youth minister in the Roman Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Prior to that James lived under simple vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience as a Capuchin Franciscan Friar in the Province of Saint Augustine. James left the community prior to taking solemn vows. After leaving community he met and married his wife Meghan in 2001.
James has a particular interest in parenting, particularly as it pertains to parenting boys. He is an avid reader and a political junkie.
